BDSM · Forty minutes

The warm-up

Blows that start far too light and end up in the right place, in that order.

Why it works

What makes impact bearable is not the force but the order. Ten minutes with a flat hand, far too light, makes the skin warm and full of blood, and then what comes afterwards feels completely different. Skip the warm up and the same strokes simply hurt.

How to do it

  • 01

Agree two things first: where on the body it may land, the backside and the back of the thighs, nowhere else, and how much may still show tomorrow, if either of you is going swimming or to a doctor.

  • 02

Start with an open hand and far too lightly, for ten minutes. The skin should be warm and red before anything harder is on the table.

  • 03

Bring in one implement, not three. Whoever is receiving says green, yellow or red every fifth stroke, and yellow means less force, not stop.

What usually goes wrong

One more implement, just to see what it does. Do not. One at a time, the whole evening. Stay on the backside and the backs of the thighs. Kidneys, spine, tailbone and joints take none of this, and marks often sit longer than you agreed.

Look after each other

Kidneys, spine, tailbone and joints do not take being struck, stay on the fleshy parts. Marks can outlast the evening they were agreed on, so that gets talked through before the first stroke falls.
