Hardcore · Twenty minutes, before anything that holds

The way out

Before you tie anything, you find out how fast you can get it off again.

How to do it

  • 01

Buy proper shears — the blunt-nosed kind an ambulance carries — and put them where the hand that will need them can reach them. Not in a drawer at the other end of the room.

  • 02

Practise once with nobody tied: make the knot, and cut it. Time it. If getting somebody free takes more than a few seconds, it is the plan that is wrong, not the person.

  • 03

Agree the checks out loud: hands and feet looked at every few minutes; cold, white or numb means it comes off now; and whoever is tied is never left alone in the room, not even to answer the door.

Look after each other

Nerve damage from a wrist tie can arrive with no pain at all. Numbness, or a hand that will not grip, is the warning, and it does not wait for the scene to end. Rope round a neck, and anything that takes weight, are a different subject and need different teachers.
